Insects as feed & food of the future

The future of food security is here ..

ProEnto is active in vertical farminginsect production and we teamed up with several researchers & specialists in the industry to assist in the development of vertical (insect) farms, regulation, funding, engineering and training.

We assist in the business development of insect farms by providing planning, operational support and insect breeding technology, with a specialty in Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia Illucens) and Yellow Mealworms (Tenebrio Molitor) to convert organic (food) waste into fertilisers and healthy food & feed ingredients.

Our main activities:

Services: business development, consultancy & training, protocols, quality control, etc

Farming: technological solutions for feed processing, insect growing, broodstock supply, climate control, registration hard- & software, etc.

Trading: connect insect supply and demand

SITUATION

  • A growing population up to 10 billion people in the next 30 years
  • Higher food intake per capita, up to 70% more food is needed
  • Less farmable land available to produce all the food that we need in the future. Food security is at risk.

  • Deforestation for soy and palm oil plantations
  • Overfishing of our oceans

  • Over 35% of our produced food ends up as waste with loss of nutrients, petrol, land & water
  • Greenhouse gas emissions due to transport of food & feed, landfill spoilage and

Depletion of natural resources will result in a lack of food, unless we implement alternative solutions to reduce the amount of waste we produce but also the way we use this waste in our benefit to feed our animals.

SOLUTIONS

WASTE REDUCTION

Food waste is a loss of nutrients, money and valuable resources. If you don't waste it, you don't have to produce, transport and process it.

WASTE MANAGEMENT & PROCESSING

Practically any organic waste, from food waste to animal manure, can be processed with larvae of the black soldier fly. By utilizing the natural process of waste conversion into insect biomass, a reduction in volume and weight up to 85% is possible, where the final residue can be used as a fertiliser or soil amendment.

If done properly, there is ZERO waste with insect farming on organic waste, as all byproducts in the process will be used without damaging or impacting ecosystems.

VERTICAL FARMING

By definition, vertical farming is a highly efficient way to produce more food on the same surface space. Compact and efficient designs, helps to produce safe and healthy food with less water and without pesticides or the use of farmable land. Vertical farming can be done in almost any building as the environment is completely controlled.

In areas where water is scarse and with extreme temperatures, automated vertical farming can be the best solution to grow food in places where you need them, without stressing eco systems. Vertical farming can be done on any size, which is interesting for restaurants that want to be able to produce fresh lettuces or grocery shops that sell fresh greens.

FERTILISERS

Insects produce insect frass, similar to worm castings, which are useful as a soil amendment with organic amonia and chitin, proven to be beneficial to increase root growth and crop yield. This highly valuable by-product of insect production can be used in the production of many crops.

ALTERNATIVE FEED

The harvested insects can be used fresh, dried or can be pasteurized, de-fatted, dried and pulverized into meal and oils for use in animal feed, like poultry, pigs and aquaculture. As an alternative to fishmeal and soy, insect meal provide equal or better nutrients for many species of animals.

Mealworm are also able to convert agricultural byproducts and are proven to be beneficial to be used in aguafeed, poultry and last but not least: for human consumption!

SUSTAINABLE

Using insects for animal feed is extremely sustainable and can help decrease overfishing of the oceans, reduce green house gas emissions, reduce landfill dumpings and helps to regain agricultural areas to produce food for human consumption. Less deforestation is needed when soy produced for animal feed is replaced by insect proteins.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Insect farming can reduce over 90% of organic residues and convert it into a vermicompost with high nutrients. Not only can we process agricultural food waste, but also manure can be converted into a valuable fertilizer. The safety of this type of manure conversion is currently evaluated by several Universities as regulation in Europe prohibits the use of manure as feed for insects.
